Janine Mackintosh is an independent, self-represented Australian artist. Janine creates unique contemporary assemblages, mainly using found objects from her heritage bush property on the wild south coast of Kangaroo Island, South Australia. She began her art practice by employing the techniques of museum plant collections but her pieces have since departed radically from tradition. 

After collecting the leaves, they are pressed and dried and sorted before being carefully placed and glued to the canvas and stitched around each stem. The artwork is then framed behind glass, to protect and preserve the leaves. 

She is particularly fascinated by leaves which have been eaten by beetles or patterned by leaf-miner insects or display the effects of weather and season – as these things communicate the intricate systems and collaborations at work in Nature. 

She loves the visual excitement of repetition, where hundreds, or even thousands, of objects are presented as one, yet she seeks to highlight their unique differences and introduces themes grounded in time and place.
